Why platinum-free matters

Oxygen reduction at the cathode is the slowest step in a fuel cell, so it needs a catalyst. Platinum works but is costly. Iron–nitrogen–carbon (Fe‑N‑C) catalysts avoid platinum; the concave design brings active sites to the surface where oxygen can reach them.
